The Voice Behind smak Cancer
Get to know Selena Martinez Mak — a scientist, patient advocate, and speaker with nearly two decades of lived experience navigating hereditary cancer.
My Story: Living with Lynch Syndrome
Selena's journey with Lynch Syndrome began nearly 20 years ago. As a young woman, being told she carried a hereditary cancer syndrome changed the course of her life. But instead of living in fear, she chose to face it with a positive attitude and a proactive mindset. She truly believes that knowledge is power. Through countless medical check-ups, cancer screenings, and preventative surgeries, Selena has remained cancer-free; shaping her resilience and driving her purpose. Her story is one of courage, community, and relentless advocacy. She didn’t just survive the diagnosis—she redefined it.
What is Lynch Syndrome?
Lynch Syndrome is a hereditary condition that increases the risk of certain cancers, especially colorectal and endometrial cancers. It is caused by inherited mutations in genes responsible for DNA mismatch repair. People with Lynch Syndrome face not only increased medical risks but also systemic barriers when trying to access timely and equitable care. Selena works to demystify this syndrome and bring light to the inequities it exposes, especially in underserved communities.

Legacy of Nazario Martinez Jr.
Selena's Father
Nazario Martinez Jr. was Selena's greatest teacher and source of strength. His life and legacy shaped her sense of justice, community, and resilience. Though he did not live to see many of the milestones Selena has achieved, his memory is alive in every workshop she leads and every patient she empowers. This section is a tribute to a man who taught her to fight with grace and never settle for silence.
Half Marathons
Running became a form of healing and defiance for Selena. Every half marathon she completes is a testament to her strength, and a statement that living with Lynch Syndrome doesn’t mean living in fear. These races are not just athletic achievements; they’re symbolic victories over uncertainty, systems, and inherited barriers. Selena runs for herself, for her family, and for every patient still finding their voice.
